Former Illinois state senator Paul Ryan has become the latest political leader to make controversial statements on Twitter.
After tweeting that his son’s new movie is not a sequel to his critically acclaimed 2009 film, I Am Legend, Ryan was promptly suspended from Twitter.
On Friday, the former Republican vice presidential candidate tweeted that he was “not an idiotic person.”
In his Twitter apology, Ryan wrote that he would “work on getting better at tweeting and staying on top of my social media.”
The tweet was in response to a tweet from a user who called Ryan “an idiot” for criticizing the upcoming sequel to I Am Not Your Hero, a 2009 film about a young man’s quest to rescue his family from the clutches of an abusive ex-boyfriend.
Ryan, who is also the chairman of the Republican National Committee, was suspended after he made the tweet, but he did not immediately retract it.
Ryan is not the only politician to make political statements online in recent weeks.
On Sunday, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin wrote a series of tweets attacking President Donald Trump.
Palin tweeted that Trump’s presidency is a “foolish attempt to turn America into a banana republic.”
Trump later retweeted the tweets.
