Solomon Sanders, the actor who played Richard Nixon from 1973-1977, died on Wednesday at his home in Manhattan.
Sanders was 79.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010 and died at his Manhattan home of complications, his family said in a statement.
He also suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a heart condition, the family said.
Sanders and his wife, Carol, were best friends, and his father, John, played a central role in his success as an actor.
Sanders made a career in TV and film.
In the early 1970s, he played the lead role in The Godfather, the final film in the franchise that spawned the films of Sergio Leone, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.
He has also played roles in such films as The Princess Bride and Goodfellas, as well as in such movies as The Godmother and In the Mood for Love.
Sanders had been suffering from a form of cancer that had not yet been diagnosed.
He died in his sleep.
“Solomon was a wonderful actor and a great friend to so many of us,” his son Joe Sanders, 66, said in the statement.
“He will be sorely missed by his many fans and loved ones.”
He was a member of the House of Representatives from New York’s 1st Congressional District since 1985 and was reelected in November, 2018.
Sanders has also appeared on Broadway and in movies.
He received the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Richard Nixon in The Nixon Chronicles.
The actor was best known for playing the character Richard Nixon on the 1970s hit series The Nixon Show, in which he was a key member of Nixon’s inner circle.
Sanders died after battling cancer.
In 2016, he said he was working on his memoir, The Truth About Richard Nixon.
“I’ve been doing a lot of work, and I have a lot to tell you,” Sanders said.
