A Chinese leader has lashed out at US President Donald Trump, calling him a “rebel” who is trying to undermine China’s position.
“If you want to call me a ‘republican’ or a ‘fascist’, I can handle that,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said during an address to the National People’s Congress, according to Xinhua news agency.
“But if you want me to call you a ‘fascist’, I’ll be ready to fight with you,” Xi added.
“As long as you want it, you can call me ‘repudiation’,” Xi added, using the phrase used to describe US President Trump’s criticism of China during his first visit to the Asian country in early 2018.
Trump has also called China a “rogue nation” and accused Beijing of stealing trade secrets.
China’s foreign ministry said Trump’s comments were “an unprovoked attack”.
Trump’s administration has previously accused China of being a currency manipulator and has said it would move to “regulate and restrict the yuan” to force it to lower its currency.
China has called the US “the single biggest currency manipulators in the world” and has been criticised for its alleged crackdown on civil society.
Xi has also vowed to defend the country against the “foreign forces” and called the Chinese government’s “great power image” a “vicious propaganda tool”.
